‘esquadrão da morte’: uma outra categoria da acumulação social da violência no rio de janeiro

O artigo trata da evolução das representações coletivas de “esquadrão da morte” no Rio de Janeiro e de suas práticas. Defende-se que, por detrás dos usos da categoria, há duas modalidades de acusação: uma que se forma entre 1957-1964 e outra que surge a partir de 1968. Nas duas primeiras partes descrevo o contexto de emergência do primeiro grupo assim definido e abordo o caso que fixou a definição e sua correspondente operação acusatória. Em seguida, analiso as mudanças na representação coletiva e sua nova forma de acusação. Por fim, exploro as implicações na tese de acumulação social da violência e apresento um quadro comparativo entre as duas modalidades.

‘Death Squad’: Another Category of Social Accumulation of Violence in Rio de Janeiro is about the evolution of the collective representations of “Death Squad” in Rio de Janeiro and its practices. The argument is that behind the uses of the category there are two modalities of accusation: one that takes form between 1957-1964 and another that emerges by 1968. In the first two parts I describe the context of emergence of the first group so defined by the name of “Death Squad” in Rio and the case that established the definition and its corresponding accusatory operation. Then I analyze the changes in collective representation and their new forms of indictment. Finally, I explore the implications on the thesis of social accumulation of violence and present a comparative picture between the two modalities.
