Abstract
Este trabajo examina los orígenes históricos y los fundamentos doctrinarios sobre los que se fundamenta el concepto de la autonomía cooperativa frente al Estado. Asimismo analiza la complementariedad del concepto con otros postulados y principios cooperativos como el de membresía abierta y voluntaria y de control democrático. A la luz de tales principios, se analiza el desarrollo del precepto de la autonomía cooperativa dentro de la legislación cooperativa en Puerto Rico, con particular atención a las reformas habidas en torno a las estructuras gubernamentales de supervisión y reglamentación del sector cooperativista en Puerto Rico en los últimos años.
