Abstract
O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar os principais conceitos associados aos desastres naturais e destacar a importância da ciência hidrológica na prevenção e mitigação dos desastres naturais ocasionadospela dinâmica do movimento da água sobre, na e sob a superfície da Terra. A partir de uma breve revisão bibliográfi ca os fundamentos conceituais sobre desastres naturais são definidos e o número de ocorrências ofi ciais evidenciados quantitativamente por tipo, gênese e distribuição. Osdesastres naturais ocorridos no Brasil são essencialmente de origemhidrometeorológica, sendo assim analisa-se o papel da ciência hidrológicana prevenção e mitigação dos mesmos.
