Abstract
This work analyzes the main debates on the history of Puerto Rico and Cuba in the light of the development of its main economic activity, the sugar industry, and tie activities with her. This exercise, realised in addition with a compared view between both islands and with other Caribbean sugar producers, allows to clarify some important questions of Puerto Rican and Cuban history. For example it allows that by the evolution of their sugar supply observed from that perspective, the first one were not an atypical case in the Antilles, since it had indicated the historiography until now, but rather the second one.
