No debate ecumênico atual, a eclesiologia é certamente o capítulo mais central e problemático, pois inclui questões tão importantes como o sacramento da ordem, o sacerdócio ministerial, a sucessão apostólica, a apostolicidade da Igreja e o primado do Papa. São questões amplíssimas, ou, no dizer de Yves Congar, "monumentais" No caso específico da apostolicidade, o que define uma comunidade eclesial como sendo apostólica? Como isso pode ser aplicado às Igrejas separadas da comunhão com Roma?
