Abstract
We completely solve the generalized Fermat problem: given a triangle ๐‘ƒ1, ๐‘ƒ2, ๐‘ƒ3 and three positive numbers ๐œ†1, ๐œ†2, ๐œ†3, find a point ๐‘ƒ for which the sum ๐œ†1๐‘ƒ1๐‘ƒ+๐œ†2๐‘ƒ2๐‘ƒ+๐œ†3๐‘ƒ3๐‘ƒ is minimal. We show that the point always exists and is unique, and indicate necessary and sufficient conditions for the point to lie inside the triangle. We provide geometric interpretations of the conditions and briefly indicate a connection with dynamical systems.
