Abstract
O ser medieval encarava a existência da humanidade como um fenômeno precário, perfeitamente delimitado. Seus relatos dessa humanidade assumem, por isso, um aspecto absoluto, revelando ascensão, ápice e declínio, ou melhor, comêço e fim de sua história. Esta, aliás, não ocupava um lugar definido entre as ciências. Não pertencendo às "sete arte liberais" (ao trivium e ao quadrivium), emprestava-lhe algum valor apenas a exegese bíblica, devido aos recursos interpretativos que proporcionava. A situação peculiar dessa exegese fazia surgir obras de caráter enciclopédico, compostas de acôrdo com a cosmovisão da teologia cristã. Inicialmente é o latim o idioma em que se exprimem êsses escritos; mais tarde surgem as primeiras terminologias em alemão (Hildegard von Bingen) e depois ence-tam alguns espíritos privilegiados um sistemático trabalho de tradução (Albertus Magnus).
