Abstract

Management Practice and Soil Conservation: Regional farmer’s perception of Pernambuco Semiarid

Abstract: Over time agriculture became the main food source of the population, following the changes in society. With this development the agricultural activity is causing major environmental degradation, particularly soil degradation that is exploited excessively. In the semiarid northeast this degradation is aggravated by the lack of rains in the region due to its intrinsic characteristics, combined with ignorance of the problem for farmers, the desire to get the maximum yield from their land because of the limitations of economic and social order. Representing a challenge to the implementation of sustainable practices of use and management of soil and water. Based on this the present study investigated the knowledge of management and conservation of soil of the settlement Nossa Senhora do Rosário’ farmers in Pesqueira city, Pernambuco, Brazil. To conduct this research, forms were applied with semi-structured questions to 16 farmers. It was found that most respondents have not demonstrated the basic/technical knowledge on the concept of management and conservation of soil and its importance. However 93.75% claimed to use management practices, among them 62.5% sustainable, stressing that the greatest problem in the region is the lack of water. Thus it was possible to realize that there is a need to support these small farmers so that they can understand the environment in which they live and work and they can handle weather-related problems.
