Abstract
A constructivist approach to the facilitation of the youth novel Dans op die rand van ’n krans (Elkarien Fourie) In this article the facilitation of a youth novel, “Dans op die rand van ’n krans” (Elkarien Fourie), is discussed from a constructivist point of view. The integration of biblically-related material in the grounding of a Christian approach to language, literacy and communication is focused on in the introductory part of the article. Furthermore an adolescent’s vision of reality is highlighted as in this respect the mentioned novel can appropriately be facilitataed to Grade 11 learners. As it is imperative that facilitators should study the narratological foundation of a novel, relevant narrative aspects such as characterisation, plot, time and space are discussed. In addition an interpretation and an evaluation of Fourie’s youth novel are included as well as an overview of constructivist theories. Relevant learner assignments on narrative aspects and their assessment of the mentioned youth novel are treated in conclusion. The attempted aim and focus of the article, however, remains to outline how the facilitation of Fourie’s novel can be applied to ensure maximum reader satisfaction and simultaneoulsy achieve certain educational outcomes.
