Abstract
Die bisherige Sichtweise der Osteoporose, auch unter Ärzten, war vielfach von dem Bild geprägt, daß diese nur langsam fortschreitet und eine Behandlung erst nach Jahren Wirkung zeigt. Dies kann heute eindrucksvoll durch "harte Daten" widerlegt werden. Neue Erkenntnisse zeigen nämlich, daß die manifeste Osteoporose eine äußerst dynamische Erkrankung sein kann, wobei das Auftreten der ersten Wirbelkörperfraktur einen dramatischen Wendepunkt in der weiteren Osteoporoseentwicklung darstellt: Nach einem solchen Ereignis steigt das zukünftige Frakturrisiko drastisch an, denn 20 % dieser Patienten erleiden innerhalb des darauffolgenden Jahres bereits die nächste Wirbelkörperfraktur.
