Abstract
ABSTRACT: The aim of this paper is to analyze the role played by monks in the Christological conflicts during the fifth century in the Pars Orientis of the Roman Empire. In particular we study the protagonism of some relevant exponents of the monastic tagma in the Councils of Ephesus I, Ephesus II and Chalcedon. Suitable political mediation in the Imperial court in the case of Constantipolitan Eutiques, extreme violence in the case of Syrian Bar Sauma, monastic power evolved from political instrument to the service of civil or ecclesiastical hierarchies into a threat to the Imperial Church which was forced to institutionalize it.
