Abstract
Este artigo apresenta algumas considerações sobre os principais mecanismos cognitivos desencadeadores de processos de gramaticalização. Mostraremos como se dá a atuação desses mecanismos, a partir da análise de um caso de gramaticalização no Português contemporâneo do Brasil: a mudança desenvolvida pelo item lexical achar, verbo pleno, que, em determinados contextos, assume a função, mais gramatical, de um elemento modalizador epistêmico.
