Abstract
O objetivo desse estudo é ler o volume de crítica Cartas literárias (1895), do escritor cearense Adolfo Caminha (1867-1897), como tentativa de esclarecer posicionamentos estéticos e políticos e de reivindicar legitimidade para sua obra, nas batalhas pelo reconhecimento no campo literário. O trabalho procura compreender a multiplicidade muitas vezes paradoxal de seus posicionamentos como expressão dos paradoxos que regiam a própria atividade literária no Brasil do final do século XIX. Ao mesmo tempo elitista e populista, idealista e materialista, romântico e naturalista, o crítico Adolfo Caminha fazia o que era preciso para legitimar sua posição como romancista naturalista no Brasil de 1890.
