Abstract
The studies of Gregory Skovoroda’s life and work continue, and every new generation discovers new facets of his heritage understanding. A specific saying which he had left to descendants becomes to be a point of special interest. This saying had been engraved upon his gravestone: «The world tried to catch me but didn’t succeed.» These last words are not only a mere summary of his life, but an ultimate expression of his vision of the world and his attitude to it. We tend to believe that the philosopher did not mean the three worlds, the description of which is fairly known, but he meant the «secular world, vain.» This world hinders any human attempts to set him- / herself free of its influence. Being understood in such a way, «the world» purposes to dissolve the man in it, to rend the human essence of the human being. The world has turned into a senseless machine, which is slowly counting the variants to enslave the man. Skovoroda raises the question of the «vocational activity» as a specific tool, directed against the increasing efforts of «the world». This question had chronologically anticipated even the very first, boldest investigations (A. Smyth, D. Ricardo, K. Marx) in this field, and cannot be easily placed among the conceptions of the two major historical trends of development - either capitalistic or socialistic. Today’s theories of economics, which are aimed at the explanation of the contemporary condition of either the world economy or a particular state or territory, do not consider (and they are not able to consider, being economical) the main ideas of Gregory Skovoroda’s teaching about the social, spiritual, and religious compatibility of human activities and the human being him- / herself. Gregory Skovoroda does not escape from the world, but he is aware that seeing and understanding of the world requires to come out of it, to be outside. It cannot be done otherwise. The world should be seen in contrast to the man. Then the man will become able to study it, grasp its difference, otherness. This process is one of the most complicated, and that is why such a small number of people are able to overcome the «gravity» and «suppression» of the world.
