Abstract
O artigo que segue tem como principal objetivo fazer uma leitura panorâmica histórica da realidade cultural, social e política da África, antes do século XV, portanto, anterior ao impacto do tráfico negreiro no Oceano Atlântico. Revisando autores especializados como: Paul Lovejoy, Claude Meillassoux, Rolland Oliver, João José Reis, Alberto Costa e Silva, tentaremos mostrar a especificidade da cultura africana, refletindo sobre a gênese da escravidão na África, o conceito de escravidão, a natureza da escravidão doméstica ou de linhagem e a formação de Estados africanos produtores de escravos.
