Abstract
Most critics agree that in the Mocedades, Rodrigo is portrayed as a rebellious and arrogant young man, almost the opposite of the loyal and mature hero of the Poema de mio Cid. In this study, the author presents a new interpretation of the role of Rodrigo as a hero and a symbol of the young kingdom of Castile that from its very beginning as an independent monarchy was able to defeat all its enemies. Christians and Moors alike. Furthermore, the comic and fantastic episodes found in the poem are signs of the esthetic transformation that the epic genre had undergone in Spain; these changes have remarkable parallels in French epic poems.
