Abstract
O presente ensaio aborda a leitura do hipertexto a partir da perspectiva de que o acúmulo de informação eletrônica constitui uma revolução histórica prenunciadora de profundas mudanças culturais e não de mero acréscimo de uma alternativa de ler mais ágil e produtiva. Ao cotejar leitura hipertextual e leitura literária, afirma que a leitura literária na forma como vinha sendo feita anteriormente corre o risco de tornar-se significativamente restrita, ou mesmo de desaparecer. A tendência ao empacotamento cultural, propiciado pelo uso intensivo do hipertexto, pode afetar intensamente tanto a maneira de ler quanto a qualidade do que é produzido para leitura. É fundamental, portanto, refletir sobre o potencial dessa tecnologia digital, de vez que a internet é um contexto cultural transformador de identidades e não apenas uma tecnologia instrumental.
