Abstract
Das Verhältnis von Parteien und Demokratie gilt gemeinhin als angespannt und problematisch. Dieser Beitrag rekonstruiert unter Rückgriff auf normative Demokratietheorien drei zentrale Funktionen politischer Parteien in repräsentativen Demokratien westlicher Prägung, eine aggregative, motivationale und deliberative Funktion. Die Befunde der empirischen Parteienforschung weisen auf eine Schwächung dieser drei Funktionen hin, die durch den organisationalen Wandel der Parteien in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten bedingt ist.
