Abstract
This paper proposes to examine the figure of rufián in El rufián viudo and Cervantes’ debts to the poems by Rodrigo de Reinosa, Álvaro de Solana, and Juan Hidalgo. The article also intends to show that, in addition to the conventional characteristics of the type of rufián that one finds in Trampago, there are also imprints of numerous literary traditions – most significantly, Garcilaso’s eclogues. The presence of Garcilaso not only introduces a change of sensibility and new themes to Cervantes’ entremés, but it also contributes to the creation of a character that transcends the literary formula.
