Abstract
Neste artigo apresento algumas questões teóricas e metodológicas sobre um dos mais promissores veios de pesquisa da chamada Nova História Cultural: a história da leitura. Discutem-se as principais dificuldades encontradas pelos pesquisadores de diversas áreas interessados em perscrutar a leitura em uma perspectiva histórica, sobretudo em relação às fontes que permitem acessar as leituras antigas, e também os caminhos metodológicos para enfrentar esses problemas apontados por Roger Chartier e Robert Darnton, autores que se notabilizaram no cenário historiográfico internacional por seus estudos sobre a leitura. Em complementação às considerações desses dois historiadores destaco ainda a contribuição de Michel de Certeau, estudioso que não elegeu a leitura especificamente como objeto de estudo, mas que contribuiu decisivamente para a consolidação desse campo de estudo histórico.
