Abstract
No limiar da última década do século XVIII, em Minas Gerais, um grupo de opinião, incorporando e reinterpretando a grande experiência histórica de sua época — a independência norte-americana — deu origem a uma organização revolucionária que pretendia suprimir o domínio português (1) . O objetivo do presente trabalho é determinar em que medida, na plano das relações reais entre a área mineira e a metrópole, emergiam, de fato, estímulos especiais que orientassem na direção de uma ruptura do statu quo colonial.
