Abstract
Resumo A escritora brasileira Nísia Floresta (1810-1885) deixou o Brasil em 1856 com destino à Europa, onde passou a viver até o fim de seus dias. Nesse período, publicou uma série de textos, dentre os quais dois relatos de viagem. Neste artigo, analiso sua trajetória enquanto viajante e escritora na Europa. Através da literatura que produziu e de outras fontes históricas sobre seu percurso, procuro demonstrar como Floresta deixou o Brasil em buscar de uma liberdade de gênero que lhe permitisse escapar das amarras da vida familiar e da sociedade patriarcal. Meu argumento é de que a viagem foi para sua vida e sua pena uma experiência libertadora. No entanto, seus escritos revelam também uma tensão, ao enfatizar e defender as expectativas da sociedade burguesa e patriarcal para as mulheres de sua condição como ideais a serem defendidos.
