Abstract
En este trabajo, propongo mostrar un panorama general de la educación bilingüe, buscando las pistas. a través de un análisis retrospectivo, de sus perspectivas futuras. Para ello, voy a tener como marco de referencia la situación de México, Guatemala, Perú. Ecuador, es decir, de las países donde la educación bilingüe tiene una historia más profunda y los alcances más importantes. ''Antes de entrar en el tema, conviene dejar anotadas algunas breves consideraciones sobre el indígena y su condición. Debe recordarse. ante todo, que no tenemos una información precisa sobre la presencia indígena en América Latina. dado que, por lo normal, los censos nacionales no consideran la variable sociolingüistica.
