Abstract

Rainfall time series analysis in Sousa city, Paraíba State, Brazil

Abstract: Sousa City, which is located in a semiarid portion of Paraíba State, Brazil, is characterized by an uneven climate behavior, both in time and space. The rainfall series analysis is an important water resources management approach, which may be useful to reduce conflicts from water scarcity and as an aid for developing policies in semiarid regions. This work aims at analyzing the behavior of rainfalls occurred in Sousa city, Paraíba State, Brazil, and contributing to the planning of activities that are influenced by the amount of rainfall, in which the results condition important decisions. The rainfall data were obtained from the National Water Resources Agency and the Executive Water Management Agency of Paraíba State, Brazil. The intense precipitations were adjusted to the probability distribution function of Gumbel. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to verify the quality of the settings. The results indicate that in the first four months of the year occur the highest rainfalls and the distribution adopted is really suitable to determine the return period of extreme events.
