Abstract
O objetivo principal deste artigo é demonstrar a importância que tiveram os animais na configuração da paisagem natural da cidade do Rio de Janeiro durante a segunda metade do século XIX e primeira década do XX, período marcado por grandes transformações urbanas, socioculturais, político-econômicas, científico-tecnológicas e ecológico-ambientais. Para alcançar esse objetivo utilizamos algumas referências feitas por Machado de Assis ao longo de sua obra sobre as intrincadas relações entre o ser humano, os animais, a tecnologia e o meio ambiente urbano.
