Abstract
En la pasada campaña electoral francesa, el candidato Nicolás Sarkozy anunció en Toulon su intención de crear una Unión Mediterránea (UM). España aplaudió el interés de Sarkozy por el Mediterráneo desde un primer momento pero también lo recibió con cautela ante la falta inicial de contenido. España y Francia coinciden en la importancia geoestratégica de la región mediterránea. Si bien, la idea española vinculaba a la UE con los países de la ribera sur y del este del Mediterráneo. Sarkozy parecía buscar una nueva organización formada exclusivamente por países ribereños y al margen del resto de países miembros de la UE. Existía además, un importante “acervo euromed” que no convenía ignorar ni menospreciar. España ha utilizado su papel de liderazgo en el seno del Proceso de Barcelona para –salvando los aspecto positivos de la idea sarkoziana- tratar de reconducir la iniciativa de Sarkozy hacia posturas comunes con el resto de los países europeos.
