Abstract
A implantação de um teatro nacional de alto nível fez parte de um projeto político que a geração de Machado de Assis abraçou com entusiasmo, qual fosse o da modernização da sociedade com vistas à inserção do Brasil no "mundo civilizado". Neste artigo procuro demonstrar em que medida Machado de Assis engajou-se nesse projeto através de sua crítica teatral, bem como discutir as razões de seu afastamento do teatro a partir de um determinado momento de sua vida.
