Abstract
Este artigo discute três posições existentes acerca do desenvolvimento cultural na Amazônia pré-colonial. Seu objetivo é enfatizar o conteúdo ideológico de cada uma delas, demonstrando que a interpretação arqueológica está sempre associada a determinados contextos sociopolíticos. Por outro lado, o artigo apresenta uma reflexão sobre o possível impacto social destas interpretações e os usos políticos da Arqueologia por parte de populações indígenas e ribeirinhas na Amazônia e em outros contextos da América Latina.
