Abstract
La sangre, llamada por Claudio Bernard junto con la linfa, "medio interior", por ser intermediarios entre el medio externo y los elementos anatómicos (aunque estos últimos no están en contacto directo con la sangre sino con la linfa) , está contenida en una serie de vasos absolutamente cerrados, y los cambios se realizan a través de los capilares, merced a las leyes que rigen la ósmosis. El líquido que trasuda a través de los vasos capilares, se denomina plasma intersticial; éste circula en los intersticios de los tejidos, para efectuar el proceso de asimilación y desasimilación; luego penetra en los vasos capilares y viene a ser la linfa canalizada; de tal suerte que este sistema viene a ser como un aparato de drenaje, encargado de reunir los productos de desgaste, pero ayudado también por el sistema venoso. Así, pues, los materiales que son necesarios para la nutrición celular, son aportados por el sistema arterial; y el drenaje está asegurado por los sistemas venoso y linfático.
