Abstract
This article will attempt to analyze important moments in the thought and action of anti-liberal Portuguese nationalism between 1820 —the Liberal Revolution— and 1940 —the height of the anti-liberal authoritarianism of the “Estado Novo”—. This ideological field incorporated a diversity of thinkers, from different currents of civic opinion and political groups, that are analyzed here from a historical perspective that combines the history of ideas and political history. It is shown how the anti-liberal nationalist political culture in Portugal was characterized by an outstanding predominance of thinkers and of French counter-revolutionary political groups, as well as by conservative Catholic indoctrination.
