Abstract
A trajetória literária e intelectual de Erico Verissimo perfaz uma rota de aproximação com a América Latina, cujos marcos mais importantes são o relato de viagem México e o romance O senhor embaixador. Este artigo analisa como se desenvolveu a compreensão do escritor brasileiro sobre a América Latina. Argumento que os Estados Unidos constantemente funcionam como contraponto e fator condicionante dessa leitura, o que pode ser associado ao debate intelectual fortemente polarizado na América Latina no contexto da Política de Boa Vizinhança e da Guerra Fria. Procuro mostrar ainda que essa polarização ideológica, somada a atributos da fatura ficcional de seus romances, levaram Erico Verissimo a permanecer em uma posição relativamente marginal no cenário cultural internacional durante os anos do boom literário latino-americano.
