Abstract
Ao intitular uma peça que integra o álbum Shock Treatment, lançado em 1968, como The Tihai, o compositor, trompetista e band leader norte-americano Don Ellis fez referência direta à música clássica indiana, mais precisamente a uma estrutura desta – tihai. A busca de um elemento pré-existente para inovar sua própria linguagem, bem como o jazz de maneira geral, apresenta forte coerência com a dialética inovação/tradição, frequentemente apontada na concepção ellisiana. À luz dos escritos e depoimentos de Ellis, este artigo investiga o seu pensamento estético, com atenção ao contexto musical ao qual ele pertenceu: o jazz. Posteriormente, analisa-se o tihai indiano em The Tihai, que abriu caminho para aquilo que o compositor chamava de “novos ritmos” (ELLIS, 1972), i.e., complexidades rítmicas que se tornaram características de sua linguagem musical. Conclui-se que a partir de tal composição Ellis concretizou seus ideais estéticos.
