Abstract
Perdendo gradativamente espaço na mídia impressa desde a concorrência televisual, por volta da década de 1970, a fotografia documental conquista as galerias de arte e o mercado editorial e assume caráter mais crítico e reflexivo. Por outro lado, a fotografia jornalística, em crise de identidade, reforça os cânones visuais das imagens históricas e pouco contribui para a reflexão a respeito da realidade. Neste artigo, o objetivo é discutir as possibilidades da fotografia documental contemporânea no âmbito da arte com base no conceito de imagem dialética, de Walter Benjamin. Parte-se da observação do ensaio fotográfico do fotógrafo francês Guillaume Herbaut na zona radioativa de Chernobyl, imagens feitas 25 anos após o acidente nuclear.
