Abstract
Durante a ocupação neerlandesa do Brasil (1624-1654) desenvolveu-se uma sociedade muito complexa, que se poderia considerar já globalizada, uma sociedade bem internacional, uma mistura de povos vindo de vários continentes, suas culturas, línguas e religiões. Estes grupos vinham ou estavam no Brasil por razões diferentes e alguns deixaram uma herança significativa, apesar de se tratar de um período relativamente breve. Neste estudo se analisa toda esta diversidade, os objetivos e as atitudes dos vários grupos que se encontravam no Brasil. De um lado, existia uma interação notável, um modus vivendi entre estes grupos; do outro, e ao mesmo tempo, eram concorrentes e inimigos. Quando os neerlandeses perdem o Brasil, por uma série de razões, os judeus deixam o país, e os indígenas calvinistas são horrivelmente torturados e mortos. A sociedade remanescente perde por séculos sua rica diversidade e suas grandes atividades científicas e culturais.
