Abstract
Met die afsterwe van die biskop van Avignon in 561 het die koning van die Franke, Clotharius die eerste, die vakante pos aan ’n Paryse priester aangebied. Laasgenoemde het die aanbod egter vriendelik maar ferm van die hand gewys. As rede het hy sy onkunde en veral sy gebrekkige kennis van korrekte Latyn aangevoer, waar hy in Avignon verplig sou wees om onder geleerdes te beweeg wat ’n suiwerder vorm van Latyn sou praat. Hierdie anekdote wat vir ons vertel word deur Gregorius van Tours in sy Geskiedenis van die Franke dui reeds op die duidelik waarneembare verskil in die kultuur en taal in die Suidelike en Noordelike dele van die sesde eeuse Gallië (Gregorius Turonensis, 1951:6.9).
