Abstract
La comparación de la actividad comercial desarrollada por dos ciudades marítimas, Cartagena y Alicante, enclavadas en la zona geográfica delimitada por la llamada Mancha mediterránea tuvo sus puntos de encuentro y de diversidad, ya que según determinados momentos las comunidades mercantiles de ambas ciudades unieron sus esfuerzos con el fin de obtener ventajas económicas de su colaboración. El marco temporal está delimitado por el valimiento de don Luis de Haro. La descripción de las comunidades mercantiles de las dos urbes nos aporta una idea sobre sus similitudes y diferencias, así como la forma en que establecieron su comercio con las zonas de influencia de cada una de ellas. Las secuelas de la epidemia de peste negra de 1648 también dejaron profundas heridas en cada ciudad, viéndose más afectada Cartagena, hasta el punto de que por orden del monarca se formó una junta de alivios que tratase de impulsar el comercio y el crecimiento demográfico.
The comparison of the commercial activity developed by two maritime cities, Cartagena and Alicante, set in the geographical area delineated by the socalled Mediterranean «Mancha», had points of similarity and division, as, depending on the particular occassions, the mercantile communities of both cities united their efforts to obtain economic advantages by their collaboration. The timeframe is set by the government of Don Luis de Haro. The description of the mercantile communities of the two cities gives us an idea of the similarities and differences, as well as the way in which they established their trade with the areas of influence in each of them. The consequences of the black plague epidemic of 1648 also left deep scars in both cities, Cartagena being the most affected, to the extent that by order of the King, a Relief Board Junta de Alivios was set up to promote commerce and demographic growth.
