Abstract
Electroless nickel coating (EN) is a highly functional engineered finish. A "composite" coating (EN-PTFE) of electroless nickel and PTFE (Teflon) is formed when PTFE micro-particles are uniformly dispersed throughout the coating. The resulting coating combines the corrosion resistance and hardness of EN with the excellent release properties and lubricity of PTFE. In this work we present the results of the tribological characterization of different coatings with a PTFE content of about 20 % and a structure Substrate EN-PTFE deposited on steel. The tribological characterization was conducted in a ball-on-disk tribometer using an alumina ball from which the friction coefficients were determined. The results for different ENPTFE coatings are discussed and compared to those obtained for simple EN coatings.
