Abstract

In the analysis of the behaviour of the Franciscan missionaries in California, there is no place for the coarse simplifications that qualify them as the «most radical members of the Order» or as the bearers of an ideology anchored in the Middle Ages. In spite of the Franciscan preaching, the California-born Indians could preserve some of their prehispanic customs. Instead, it was in the US period, especially during the ‘Gold Rush’, when there was in California a hecatomb of the Indians, when one can speak of a genocide or extermination of the Indians, but not in the previous Spanish period.
