Abstract

Teaching foreign illiterate italian l2 students. educational issues and proposals

There is an increasing demand for Italian L2 courses for foreigners who possess weak literacy skills in their mother tongue. Italian L2 teachers for illiterate people have few methodological indications and materials dedicated to reading and writing techniques. Materials developed specifically for the development of listening and speaking skills without the aid of written support are virtually non-existent.

This paper offers an overview of the complex and heterogeneous situation of these “weak” learners, highlighting both the particular psychological and cognitive characteristics related to poor literacy in adulthood, as well as the practical restrictions due to the impossibility of using written language. It is necessary to link the teaching approach to everyday reality and communicative situations by using alternative materials to written ones, like repetition and the diversification of tasks.

The second part of the article addresses the editorial void for this type of the Italian L2 learner by offering the teacher a selection of audiovisual materials that are easily accessible on the internet, accompanied by teaching suggestions for their use with elementary (A1-A2) and intermediate (B1) level students regarding oral skills. 40 videos covering the 6 basic semantic areas (identity and people, food and drink, clothing, housing, work, health), create a ready-to-use mini-course.
