Abstract
O presente trabalho descreve brevemente a evolução da pesquisa em tradução, abordando o deslocamento de seu foco do produto para o processo, até a adoção da metodologia empírica para acessar os processos mentais desenvolvidos durante o ato tradutório. Traça as origens desta metodologia a partir da psicolingüística voltada para a aprendizagem de línguas até sua aplicação no campo dos estudos da tradução. Finalmente, relata as investigações em curso no âmbito do Projeto PRONIT, que se utilizam de métodos introspectivos, apontando resultados e indicando caminhos a serem seguidos no futuro.
