Abstract
Desde los años sesenta del presente siglo se adelantaron numerosas investigaciones, con respaldo cuantitativo, sobre los procesos electorales. Tales estudios se originaron en las preocupaciones suscitadas por las altas tasas de abstención electoral que se registraron a lo largo del período del Frente Nacional: 1958-1974. Los temas más frecuentes de esos estudios fueron los siguientes: las tendencias participación-abstención, la distribución de la votación por partidos, las tendencias del voto urbano y rural. De manera más ambiciosa la investigadora Patricia Pinzón se ocuparon de medir la consistencia de las lealtades regionales hacia el Partido Liberal y el Partido Conservador a lo largo de periodos históricos prolongados.
