Abstract
Un rasgo interesante de la sociedad santafereña durante el periodo Colonial tardío era la gran variedad de modalidades familiares. Esta peculiaridad debe ser vista en el contexto de la definición de matrimonio -el inicio formal de la familia- que distaba mucho del concepto contemporáneo. En efecto, aunque la estricta separación entre el matrimonio propiamente dicho y el compromiso matrimonial había quedado establecida en el Concilio de Trento (1563), todavía en el siglo XVIII la palabra matrimonial tenía un importante peso cultural y las parejas que iniciaban vida de hogar a través de la verbalización del compromiso y del intercambio de prendas simbólicas, eran aceptadas por la comunidad de amigos y parientes.
