Abstract
One problem faced by fishers in Bali strait relating to the impact of climate variability was the drastic decline in purse siners’ catch during La Niña episode that caused economic losses. To predict the impacts, this study analysed the relationship between the climate variability and the productivity of purse seine vessels operated in the Bali strait. The result of statistical analysis shows that the vessel productivity was affected by climatic variability and fishing effort. The impact of climate variability on the vessel productivity was high-significantly indicated by the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Meanwhile, the relationship between the vessel productivity and climatic variability of the previous year nor the Dipole Mode Index was not significant. Furthermore, there was a highly significant relationship between the vessel productivity and the average SOI in the first six-month of the same year. Therefore, the average SOI in the first six-month of the year could be used to predict the annual vessel productivity.
