Abstract
Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar los resultados de una investigación sobre las percepciones y experiencias de los profesores de educación básica frente a la introducción del inglés en este nivel de escolaridad. La muestra está compuesta por once profesores de varias instituciones educativas de la ciudad de Coimbra (Portugal), entrevistados en profundidad. La información recolectada se somete a análisis cualitativo, desde categorías predeterminadas. El estudio concluye que los profesores consideran que no tienen la preparación necesaria para la tarea de enseñar inglés en edades tan tempranas. Perciben que esta situación genera indisciplina en el aula y desmotivación de los alumnos para el aprendizaje de la lengua.
The article presents the results of a study on the perceptions and experiences of primary school teachers with respect to introduction of the English language at this level of schooling. The sample was comprised of eleven teachers from several schools in the city of Coimbra (Portugal), who were interviewed in depth. The information collected was subject to a qualitative analysis based on predetermined categories. The study concluded that teachers feel they are not sufficiently prepared to teach English to children who are so young. They believe doing so leads to indiscipline in the classroom and discourages students from learning the language.
