Abstract
Este trabalho objetiva discutir a relação entre epitáfio, monumento e memória nas sociedades romanas antigas e no século XVI, no qual se efetua a produção dos epitáfios laudatórios de Pêro de Andrade Caminha, que institui um louvor aos ilustres que compunham a monarquia portuguesa quinhentista. A poesia fúnebre produzia por Pêro de Andrade Caminha, no século XVI, vincula-se a uma tradição retórico-poética que especifica os gêneros, as espécies e os indivíduos a serem representados, a qual é reforçada pelas preceptivas, fomentando, desse modo, uma relação estreita entre poética, retórica, política e memória no Estado monárquico português. As discussões abordadas foram motivadas durante o desenvolvimento da dissertação no curso de mestrado Memoria: Linguagem e Sociedade da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia – UESB.
