Abstract
Se ofrece una aproximación a la red de términos que se utilizaba para clasificar e identificar a los pobladores de las Indias. La indagación se realiza con base en las cartas de venta, los asientos y un ejemplo de una causa de amparo depositados en la Notaría Primera de Santafé y en la de Tunja, entre 1550 y 1635, es decir, en los primeros años en que se instauró la Real Audiencia y se nombraron los primeros escribanos y funcionarios encargados de legitimar los procesos de venta de esclavos y los conciertos de trabajo con los indios.
