Abstract
ABSTRACT: In spite of the considerable time lapse since the beginning of the democratic transitions in the Southern Cone countries, the unresolved questions surrounding the grave human rights violations during the military regimes of the 1970s and 1980s continue dominating the political agenda more than expected. This becomes even more apparent when one considers the vitality of the legal and illegal impunity mecanisms established during these regimes. This article explores a comparative panorama of the principal methods adopted by the Argentine, Chilean and Uruguayan governments in response to certain social demands, in a debate that continues to the present, both in a national and an international context.
