Abstract
O artigo analisa as duas edições da obra do historiador norte-americano Richard Morse sobre São Paulo – De comunidade à metrópole, publicado em 1954 e Formação histórica de São Paulo, lançado em 1970 – buscando mostrar como no período entre as duas edições um pensamento latino-americano sobre as cidades pode se constituir. Pretende-se ler a obra de Morse em diálogo com esse debate, discutindo as transformações do texto e a trajetória do autor entre os quase vinte anos que separam as duas edições, lançando luz na constituição e consolidação do campo dos estudos urbanos no continente.
