Abstract
Neste artigo discute-se o problema da reconstrução lingüística, em especial a reconstrução do antigo português paulista. Nessa tarefa, será levada em consideração a proposta de Jespersen para uma escala de incerteza em afirmações científicas a respeito de fenômenos diacrônicos. Mencionar-se-ão alguns aspectos da sistemática filogenética de Hennig e se considerará a possibilidade de sua aplicação em dados lingüísticos.
