Abstract
On the 1st of. May 2015, in Meatpacking District
of West Manhattan, the new building of the Whitney
Museum of American Art was opened. It is the fourth location
of this well-known New York museum, which was
established in 1930, by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The
Whitney possesses the world’s largest collection of American
art and focuses on exhibiting living artists. Spectacular, industrial
in character architecture signed by Renzo Piano has
met with mixed reactions. The building is functional and
well connected with the post-industrial site, however, not
appreciated by everyone. Similar situation happened forty
years ago, when Centre of Georges Pompidou, designed by
Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, pioneers of high-tech architecture,
was widely criticised. Only popularity, high attendance
and commercial success of famous Paris facility
changed that negative opinion. Is the New Whitney following
the same path – time will tell.
